whatChladni's singing plate: bow a metal square and it vibrates in one of its modes -- still along certain curves, violent everywhere else. Thrown sand cannot rest where the plate moves; it walks, grain by grain, into the silence, and the silence has a SHAPE.
whyThe claim: the sand finds the nodal lines and draws the mode's figure -- and this is measured, not admired: the grains' mean vibration amplitude, relative to the plate's own mean, collapses toward zero as the figure crystallizes (printed as 'sand off the antinodes'). Sweep the frequency and the figure TEARS -- between modes the field is a mixture with no clean silence, the grains scatter into measured transient chaos -- then the next figure gathers them again, its settling time on the clock. Every frequency is a different geometry of quiet.
howSquare-plate mode combinations cos(m pi x)cos(n pi y) minus its mirror, ordered by frequency and blended continuously along the slider; grains descend the squared amplitude with amplitude-scaled jitter -- shaken hard where the plate sings, still where it is silent. Everything seeded; click throws fresh sand at the pointer.
